3 Things to Consider When Outsourcing Your IT Services

In today's world, there are many different kinds of technology companies. Some are service based only. Others are manufacturing based. And still others are a combination. When it comes time to managing technology, there are 3 types that should be considered: on-site, basic remote support, and managed service providers. Let's examine all 3 of these and their respective benefits.

On-Site

As a former owner of an on-site company I can really speak to how these types of companies work. These companies charge a premium dollar for their skilled technicians to come to your place of business and with the right tools of the trade, fix the issue at hand. The benefit is they are in your office and you get the feeling of having someone present and the inherent benefit of knowing where your hard earned company dollars are going. You can watch this person, see that they are working, and once they fix it you have someone to thank. However, the downsides are that you are on their watch... they get there when THEY want to, and usually your crisis has to be scheduled WHEN a technician is available. Although if you are experiencing an emergency someone can be sent right out... at twice to three times the dollar amount.

Basic remote support

Typically when one thinks about the term remote support we think of being on the phone with someone who doesn't speak the native tongue and is not necessarily trained in anything more than where to route our phone calls. However, depending on the company of your choice, there are remote support companies that can provide level 1 support and handle the majority of the issues that users really experience. The underlying issue is that you only can talk with this person on the phone. There is no personal relationship nor are you guaranteed to get this same person on the phone every time you call. Typically this is random. The last drawback to this kind of service is what happens when you do need someone on-site to come out? That is once again where this equation goes wrong.

Managed Services

Managed service providers (MSP) have been surfacing over the last 5+ years. These companies tend to offer a combination of remote services that include what they claim to be the end-all be-all of IT service and support companies. The services they offer tend to be: remote monitoring and alerting of all systems, all patching and updating completed during off hours, a backup solution, and a help desk to provide first point of contact for clients. This option is becoming more and more appealing. However, the traditional MSP does not usually provide an on-site component in the contract that they have you sign for their managed services offering. They typically add that as an additional fee.
